Blogging Goals 2017

clinique, skincare, by terry, baume de rose, love style life, porter, magazine, net a porter, diptyque I’ve already shared my 2017 goals on the blog but I thought it would be nice to share some of the blogging related goals that I hope to achieve this year. It’s crazy to think another year of blogging has went and by the end of this month it will be my 7th blogging anniversary! Say whaaat!? 2016 saw a lot of change around my blog and I felt like as my interests changed and grew, I created more content that I felt happy with. As my blog generally improved, I also got the chance to work with some amazing brands too! So here is to another year of blogging and hopefully an even better year! So this is what I would love to have checked off my list by this time next year…

  1. Improve my photography – My photography has already improved massively in the last couple of years, I mean just look at some of my older posts (apologies in advance if you do!). Photography is one of my favourite things about blogging and I’ve learnt so much from being the one behind the camera to also being exposed to the various photography styles used by different bloggers. I’ve grown a little tired of having the same old flat-lay, I want to experiment a little more in adopting different styles but also making my basic flat-lay a lot less basic!
  2. Get more use out of social media – Social media is such an important tool for bloggers and I definitely want to make more use out of it. As well as promoting posts on Twitter and Pinterest, I want to add more additional content particularly on Instagram! I hope that I can get more active and also get more chatty as I know there is a wide range of bloggers about!
  3. Update my blog design – I changed my blog about a couple of years ago and I still love the way it looks! Although there is some aspects that could do with updating to make it even better. I may also go down the line of upgrading my WordPress? Who knows but hopefully I will be very happy with the look of my blog this time next year!
  4. Branch out into other content – Beauty is obviously one of the main focuses on this blog however I have so many other interests that don’t get as much air time. Style in particular is an area I would love to chat more about, especially since it is the reason I started this blog in the first place! Hopefully along with my first goal of photography, I will be able to better capture style and clothing photos as it is something I do struggle with! I also want to up my lifestyle and food related posts, I spoke a bit about my change in eating a few times so I would love to being share more on that!

2017 Goals and 2016 Reflection

2017, new year, resolutions, goals, achievements, reflect, 2016, year, review, diptyque candle, succulent, the white company, candle, peoniesHappy New Year and Hello 2017! What better way to start 2017 than the clichéd New Years Resolutions! Whilst some people will roll their eyes, I personally love setting goals for myself. It can be so motivating having something in mind to achieve and of course it’s incredibly rewarding to have a successful end result! So I thought I would share some of my personal goals for the year ahead as well as looking back at my goals from 2016 to see how I got on!

2016 Reflection

It seems like quite the trend to simply hate on 2016. Whilst a lot of tragedy took place over the year across the world, personally 2016 was a decent and mostly successful year for myself.  I made four goals for myself in 2016 which you can recap on here. The first one related to improving my blog. Now if you look at last years post and compare the photo from last year to now, I think you can tell that there has been some large improvements! My photography has improved massively, as well as changing up what I blog about which has definitely improved the quality of my posts. Connecting with others on social media has been rather slow however and this is still something to work on! I am going to do a separate post on blogging goals for 2017 so keep your eye out!

I also spoke about adopting a healthier lifestyle. I have been really happy with my success on this goal. Snacking has always been a big issue of mine and I’ve really curbed my sugar appetite! I’ve learnt a lot about healthy eating and even trying out new recipes and cookbooks this year. On the fitness side of things, I still continue doing yoga and I also took up a bit of running over the Summer. I could definitely have improved my fitness from the year but I am still happy with my progress and I am also over a stone lighter than I was in Summer 2016!

Also, one of my goals was to invest properly in my wardrobe and have a good clear out essentially starting fresh! I really wish I took a picture of my wardrobe then and now as it has changed so much! This time last year it was full of unworn and unwanted clothes and now I have so much space as well as a wardrobe filled with some really great pieces. Whilst there is still a bit more cutting down that can be done, I am really happy about how it is looking now. Speaking of wardrobe revamping, Farfetch have created a swishy Capsule Wardrobe Generator which can help give you a little inspiration for giving your wardrobe a revamp for 2017. There is already so many beautiful pieces I am dreaming about…, check it out here!

Finally, my last goal for 2016 was to save regularly. When I look at my spending from the last month, I am starting to wince now at the thought of this goal! Nevertheless, I started the year off pretty well taking a note of everything I wanted to buy from the month and how much it would cost. I also saved a good bit too and put money towards things I had always wanted. I could’ve been stricter but I am still feeling positive about this goal!

2017 Goals

Now onto what I want to achieve this year…

    1. Invest in body-care – A couple of years ago I really wanted to get into a regular skincare routine and since then I can’t go a day without. Now I really want to spend more time and efforts into maintaining good body-care. It is easy to focus on cleansing your face etc. but when it comes to body care and looking after the rest of us, it can easily be neglected. I want to keep up with regular moisturising ensuring my limbs are as cared for as my face!
    2. Continue a healthier lifestyle – I already spoke about my progress from 2016 and I want to continue finding new recipes, eating better and also even trying to do a little exercise now and again!
    3. Spend more wisely – I love buying clothes and makeup as I am sure you all know! Although I want to be more stricter about dropping money on more things every now and again. I already have so much makeup that I would love to use up rather than continuously buying more! I have a few ‘treat-yo-self’ or spendy purchases I would like to get this year so I am hoping I can cut out on regularly unnecessary spending and save regularly!
    4. Have fun – I’m still young and whilst I have many things going on, I still have time to do whatever. Instead of wasting that time away, I want to properly cherish it and use it properly. See my friends, go out and do something new or even just watch a movie that I’ve been desperate to see for a long time! Why sit sulking when you can do something enjoyable!

Life Lately #12

december, christmas 2016, new year, life, lifestyle, 2016, round up, blog, blogger, university, blogging, christmas cookies, diptyque candles, white company, essie polishMerry Christmas! I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas! It is crazy to think it’s been and gone already but I still count the time being as the Christmas period and of course we all still have New Years to look forward to! So on that note, Happy New Year when it comes as this will be my last post of 2016! How crazy!

Life

This month has been pretty crazy, and not just because of the build up to Christmas. I finished my semester at uni which of course meant exams. I spent the first half of December in exam mode which as you can imagine wasn’t the most exciting way to spend the start of the festive month! Obviously though the feeling of getting exams out the way and looking forward to Christmas was indeed very exciting! Annoyingly enough however after my exams past I felt in such a rush and ever so busy with work and preparing for Christmas that I never really felt as chilled as I imagined it would be. Nevertheless with it all cooled down now, I have been enjoying simply doing nothing over the last few days with lots of chocolate and cheesecake and finally catching up on TV that I’ve missed over the past month! I am very much excited to keep that going for the next few weeks before it’s back to uni again!

Blogging

Of course with the busyness of the past month, I’ve not had a lot of time to spend on my blog. I’ve also felt a little uninspired too lately and I’ve been feeling like I’ve been in such a rush to come up with ideas, never mind write the posts. I took the decision before to cut my blog posts from three posts a week to two which has helped so much! However with a lack of inspiration, I feel pressured by myself to meet my two a week post schedule and it’s obviously no good when I have a lack of ideas and no one wants rushed poor quality blog posts. So to help get myself out of this rut, I have decided to get rid of my ‘Tuesday/Friday’ schedule and instead just post whenever. It isn’t the most ideal especially for my usual organised self but it does mean that I can post when I really want to with posts that I have put all my efforts into and that I really want to post instead of just random rushed posts that are published just to meet my schedule. This doesn’t mean that I will hardly post, there probably will be less posts but I am still going to be active on here and posting as often as I can. I read many other blogs which I love who post randomly without a set schedule so hopefully that won’t bother anyone too much!

On the other hand, I have been pretty active on Instagram this month! I did make a little goal for myself to post every day until Christmas and whilst I did miss a couple of days I did pretty well and it was good to finally get back on to the platform. It was also fun to share some extra stuff too so you can check out all my latest posts here.

Life Lately #9

life-lately-fall-autumn-2016-september-lifestyle-blogger-blog-beauty-style-makeup-fashionIt feels so nice to be typing up a blog post right now as September has been a hectic month and it has really affected my blogging this month! I’ve been super busy with work and of course university starting back so the time for my blog has been limited but on top of that I’ve also felt so uninspired right now! I am definitely feeling like I am in a bit of a creative funk at the minute with ideas and when I have such limited time to plan and prepare posts it makes it worse as the last thing I want to do is publish poor quality rushed content! So, to help ease my way back into blogging and get motivated again, I’ve decided to change up my blogging schedule. I usually post three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday but in order to fit around my other commitments I’ve decided to cut my schedule to twice a week! Starting next week, my blog will have fresh content on a Tuesday and Friday at 10am GMT. It’s annoying to have to reduce the number of posts but hopefully it will make my life a lot easier!

Anyway, blogging rambling over. As I mentioned I started back at university this month. How exciting! Summer definitely felt like it went past in a flash and I feel so overwhelmed by the fact that I need to get back into living the student life. Fun. On a plus note, it is now three months til Christmas, if that is not exciting then I really don’t know what is! Whilst I am not particularly thrilled about the amount of workload that is about to hit me soon, I am excited to get productive and soon before I know it will be time for hot chocolate, winter coats and snow. Ahh, heaven!

Before things get all winter-y though, Autumn has arrived first! In the spirit, I did a bit of clothes hauling to fill up some of the gaps in my wardrobe. I picked up the majority of things from my Autumn Style wishlist and I just need a couple more things before I am pretty happy! Hopefully next month I can also pick up my dream Acne Boots that I’ve been saving up for! Considering I’ve cleared out a lot from my wardrobe recently, I do think I deserve a little treat, right!?

In terms of beauty, I was also super hyped by the arrival of Kat Von D makeup in the UK. Finally! There will be a little reveal soon on the blog so keep your eyes pealed! I did also hear of a little rumour about Sephora coming to the UK but I don’t want to get my hopes up too much but that really would be the icing on the cake!

Life Lately #7

life-lately-lifestyle-blogger-blog-lblogger-update-beauty-gucci-bags-careerSummer just seems to be flying by and it’s crazy to think that August (my birthday month, eek!) is about to begin! This month has been a little crazy. Since my last job came to an end and uni has stopped for the Summer, I have been looking desperately for another job. Luckily, I got a few job interviews which has taken up some of my time to prepare for, hence the job interview makeup post!  I succeeded in my first interview and took the job. I started it last week however it hasn’t been great. My first day wasn’t great and I just felt more and more demotivated. It really isn’t the job for me! However very luckily, I was super relived when I came home from my first shift to learn that I had been offered another job which was one I really wanted! So next month I am super happy to be starting another new job that will hopefully turn out much better than my current one!

Job searching aside, the weather has been pretty poor except from the odd few days of heat in the UK. That didn’t stop me however taking a nice little weekend away with one of my friends before I started my job. I hadn’t been doing much during the month or had much planned so it was nice to just spend a few days chilling and having pretty much no internet! Other than that, nothing else really happened during July, much to the busyness of dealing with my interviews and how bad the weather was.

In terms of blogging, I have to admit there has been times this month were I just haven’t been feeling it. Before I went away and when I started work, I did feel pretty pressured to ensure I had a good blog post arranged for those times and it has been a bit of a struggle even finding time to take photographs never mind thinking of a good post idea. I did mix it up a bit though with some more lifestyle-y posts particularly my foodie post talking about ingredients to have in your cupboard which was so different for me to write about. I also haven’t worn much makeup for the most of the month so I did feel a little uninspired beauty wise! Hopefully though next month, I will have a few new beauty things to share (like my recent little Charlotte Tilbury splurge!) and of course being my birthday soon, I gotta treat my self, right!

Tips on Blog Photography

photography-tips-improve-blog-photos-blogger-lifestyle-image-adviceThere is so much more to a blog than just an interest in beauty or style or food etc. Photography plays a huge role and whilst I am no expert, I have learned a lot about taking good photos from experience over time on my blog. I have also been lucky to have many comments talking about my photography and I thought it was about time I did a post talking through my tips and everything I’ve learned to improve my blog photos!

COMPOSITION

Composition is hugely important to consider when taking a photo. It involves the layout and the arrangement within the photo. Two of the main things you need to consider is the focal point and the busyness of the photo. Both of which pretty much go hand in hand. Starting with focal point, for example if you are doing a review of a foundation, you want the photo to capture the foundation as the focal point. If you are using other props or products, you want to ensure they appear more in the background.

This also ties in with how busy the photo is. If you are wanting to focus on one product, you want to keep the composition simple and not have too many props which will just take the eyes off the focus. Again if your composition has numerous products then you don’t want to over-complicate the photo by adding even more props/products to the mix.

The background is also super important as it can also add that busyness feel if you are using a ‘busy’ background. I like to stick to a white background (I use white paper/wood) as a backdrop to create a flat lay image. Using a soft block colour keeps it simple and soft. You can inject a little pattern such as marble or a wood effect but obviously you have to be careful when you start adding props that it isn’t too busy. If I ever add any pattern, it is usually in the form of a scarf, or a tray so doesn’t take up the whole photo and instead adds a little more dimension.

LIGHTING

I don’t think I can stress how important lighting is in taking photos. If you live in a place that is fairly bright and light instead of being like me in the miserable and dull UK then damn you are lucky. Natural lighting is so vital in taking photos and has made such a difference to mine. Ditch artificial lighting as it can create a horrible orange yellow cast over the photo and doesn’t really make it bright at all. You want to set up your photo next to good lighting, I always take mine on the floor next to a full length glass door so I get the light shining on it. So I would suggest getting a good window location that lets in a good amount of light in.

The timing is also important in terms of lighting. The best time to take photos is in the morning as it is light without being too bright and obviously in the evening it is too dark. Speaking of brightness, whilst a sunny day always seems like a bonus, if it is too bright then it can be quite difficult to get a good shot as it will usually cast shadows. The best weather for taking photos is when it is fairly cloudy yet with still a bit of light!

EDITING

Whilst the actual steps of taking a photo are very important, there is also editing. I always edit my photos, however I try to avoid going overboard and ensure my lighting is as good as I can get it. Basically the better the raw image the less editing and the worse the more editing that you will need. I use PicMonkey to edit my photos which is super easy!

To edit, I rely on two main things. The first the size, I always size my images down to fit for my blog and also crop if necessary! The second is exposure which is the main editing I rely on. As you may know, I like bright white and airy images and as natural lighting doesn’t always capture this so well, I like to adjust the brightness/highlights accordingly. I also adjust the contrast/shadows so the products don’t get too washed out. However when adjusting the exposure you do have to be careful not to overexpose your images (I have been guilty many times!) as it can just look pretty contrived and unnatural.

One last thing I also do in editing is adjust the temperature/saturation. I only do this sometimes when my images are quite dark and have a blue cast over them. So by warming the colours up a bit it makes it much brighter and less duller and blue!

EQUIPMENT

So many people say you don’t need expensive equipment and loads of it to take a good photo and that is so true. I actually take all of my photos on my iPhone 6 and it always takes decent photos. Phone cameras have long been developed so are far superior than the ever were. In fact they only seem to be getting better, my old iPhone 4S was responsible for taking a load of my pictures over a year ago and then I moved on to using the 5C model which was much better and then to the 6 which is definitely the best I’ve used. So if you are looking to improve your photography then don’t get too stressed if you don’t own a fancy DSLR camera! I have a digital camera but my phone is actually better so I use that. I actually would love to invest in a camera sometime just because I have became so into photography since my blog! However it is definitely not a must!

If you do use an iPhone for photos, all I would suggest is to firstly ensure your lens is clean! It’s actually crazy the difference it makes if you simply wipe the lens as it makes a photo so much clearer. Obviously your phone is left in your bag, pocket, tables etc. so picks up on bacteria easy so giving it a little clean is definitely recommended! Also, whenever taking a photo I always rely on the focus tool. By simply pressing where you want the focus to be it adapts the lighting to capture it better. Additionally, when hitting to focus if you drag the little sun symbol up it also improves the brightness of the image making editing less the challenge!

So really all you need is a good working camera, aside from that I have a tripod although really I haven’t used it much and don’t see it as necessary unless you take outfit, head shots. As I mentioned before a good backdrop is also important for flat lay images whether it’s a piece of wood, paper, wallpaper/flooring samples. That’s it really, the rest is down to you and your creative mind!

What are your tips for good blog photography?

6 Years Of Blogging

Blogging Birthday CupcakeTomorrow marks a pretty special day for me. If you haven’t already guessed from the title then well tomorrow is my sixth year of blogging. Six years ago I stumbled across WordPress for reasons I cannot remember but I happened to set up an account and the rest is history I guess as I sit here typing on the same blog six years later. At the time, I was barely in my teens and with a strong interest for fashion I loved the feeling of having my own little online magazine (what I thought of it anyway!) and whilst I wasn’t the most dedicated blogger at that time it was still a pride possession of mine.

Now in 2016, as I leave my teenage years behind, my blog has evolved a lot since I first started. I completely re-branded my blog last year and also bought my own domain, passions and interests have also changed as I developed a strong love for beauty which now holds as the prime topic covered on my blog. If you told me in 2010 that I would be splurging on luxury beauty products I probably would’ve laughed it off, I would’ve felt the same if I got told I would have a proper blog schedule! It is safe to say my blog has changed dramatically and for many of my regular readers it may come as a surprise that I have been sitting behind this blog for six whole years. It feels insane to be saying that! For the first few years though I never blogged regularly at all so you were lucky to see a monthly post from me, oh how times have changed!

Anyway I thought I would reflect on my time blogging and talk about what I have learnt from being a blogger and also a little look at some of my posts through the years!

What I have learnt:

  1. The Internet isn’t as scary as you think – This is a pretty important one especially with blogging. I think we all have this image of online bullying and nastiness online when it comes to online communities etc although with blogging it couldn’t have been any different. It is so nice to be within a community of such lovely people who all share common interests. When it comes to blogging there is so many people in the same boat and it is just a lovely place to communicate with others. Thanks to all the lovely bloggers out there for all your support and being so lovely!
  2. Blogging takes time – Blogging seems easy from the outside but it really isn’t. It takes time to grow your blog and find your style. It also requires time and dedication which is never easy when blogging isn’t your job. There is a lot to it with writing posts, promoting on social media, responding to comments/emails, photography etc although in the end it does feel worth it!
  3. Comparison really is the thief of joy – I think everyone compares themselves to others in some kind of way especially when it comes to blogging. I love reading blogs and I discover so many amazing creative online spaces that sometimes make me unappreciative towards my own. It is important to take pride in your own work and remember everyone is different. The best thing about other blogs is that they can simply inspire you to feel motivated and enthusiastic about blogging!
  4. It’s okay to be yourself – Following on from the last point, I think blogging teaches you a lot about yourself. Just looking back at my six years of blogging I have also changed as a person by developing new interests and opinions. I think sometimes we try to adopt to social norms by doing things and acting how others would accept although your life, your rules, right? Having a blog has allowed me to really be myself by for once by focusing on my real interests in life. There is no point in trying to be someone you’re not.

Reflecting on old posts..

What have you learnt from blogging?
